Dr. Nashon Walker and The HoodRISE Academy Staff host 1st Annual HoodRISE Academy Awards Ceremony

Dr. Nashon Walker and the HoodRISE Academy staff hosted the 1st Annual HoodRISE Academy Awards Ceremony, for the students that successfully completed the program and that performed above and beyond our expectations.

2018 HoodRISE Academy Award Recipients:

7th grade girls:

  • Hilary Pena:
    Hilary moved to Harrisburg without her mother and father, and lives with one of her younger brothers, her aunt and cousins. Her mother lives in California and her father and other siblings live in New York. She had major attitude issues and had trouble staying out of drama when she first joined HoodRISE Academy. Since she’s been apart of HoodRISE Academy for almost two years there have been major improvements made to her attitude and grades. She has stayed out of drama almost entirely, has made the honor roll four marking periods consecutively, and has maintained very close to a 4.0 GPA throughout the entire 2017-2018 school year. She is a cheerleader and plays basketball. Hilary is the co-recipient of the HoodRISE Academy 7th grade girls Turnaround Student of the Year Award.
     

  • Money Williams:
    Before Money joined HoodRISE Academy, she struggled to stay out of drama and her grades weren’t the best. When she first joined HoodRISE Academy she was very quiet and kept to herself, after she became acquainted and comfortable with the HoodRISE Academy staff she opened up and was more talkative. Since she has been apart of HoodRISE Academy we have seen huge improvements in her attitude and grades. She has stayed out of drama almost entirely, has made the honor roll four marking periods consecutively, and has maintained very close to a 4.0 GPA throughout the entire 2017-2018 school year. Money is the co-recipient of the HoodRISE Academy 7th grade girls Turnaround Student of the Year Award.
     

  • Heaven-Leigh Hairston:
    Before Heaven-Leigh joined HoodRISE Academy, she struggled to stay out of drama, and was very quiet. After she became acquainted and comfortable with the HoodRISE Academy staff she opened up, was very talkative and brought a lot of joy and laughter to the students and staff of HoodRISE Academy. Since she has been apart of HoodRISE Academy she has decreased the amount of drama she participates in. She always comes into HoodRISE Academy with a smile on her face, full of energy, and is always enthusiastic about what we do on a daily basis. She plays basketball and likes to listen to music. Heaven-Leigh is the recipient of the HoodRISE Academy 7th grade girls Spirit Award.
     

  • Arixamar Novoa:
    Before Arixamar joined HoodRISE Academy, she struggled to stay out of drama and her grades weren’t the best. She was very quiet and kept to herself when she first joined HoodRISE Academy, after she became acquainted and comfortable with the HoodRISE Academy staff she began to talk and participate in discussions. Since she has been apart of HoodRISE Academy we have seen huge improvements in her attitude and grades. She has stayed out of drama almost entirely and she gets mainly A’s and B’s. She enjoys watching movies and hanging out with friends. Arixamar is the recipient of the HoodRISE Academy 7th grade girls Most Improved Student Award.

8th grade girls:

  • Jalasia Hull:
    Before Jalasia joined HoodRISE Academy, she struggled to stay out of drama, she was getting into fights, she was hanging out with the wrong group of girls, and her grades suffered. She was also expelled from Rowland School. After joining HoodRISE Academy, she has stayed almost entirely out of drama, she no longer gets into fights, she doesn’t hang out with negative influences, and she gets mainly A’s and B’s. She played on the Freshman basketball team for John Harris High School, in Harrisburg, PA, during the 2017-2018 season. She also applied and was accepted to Sci-Tech High, in Harrisburg, PA. She plans to attend Sci-Tech throughout high school and continue to play basketball for John Harris High School. She has aspirations to play college basketball. Jalasia is the recipient of the HoodRISE Academy 8th grade girls Turnaround Student of the Year Award.
     

  • Sahliyah McGill:
    Before Sahliyah joined HoodRISE Academy, she struggled to stay out of drama, she was hanging out with the wrong group of girls, and her grade suffered. She was very quiet and stayed to herself when she first joined HoodRISE Academy, after she became acquainted and comfortable with the HoodRISE Academy staff she opened up and was more talkative. After joining HoodRISE Academy she stayed out of drama almost entirely, she was no longer hanging out with negative influences and her grades improved. She has aspirations to be a hairdresser/hairstylist and to open her own hair salon. Sahliyah is the recipient of the HoodRISE Academy Overcomer Award.

6th grade boys:

  • Mylik Young:
    From his fifth- to sixth-grade years, Mylik has shown major improvements in class attendance, class participation, and his grades after joining HoodRISE Academy. He has also lowered the amount of suspension days he’s had compared to last school year.  When he first joined HoodRISE Academy he was quiet and hesitant to collaborate, but since he has been talkative and flourished in collaborative projects with other students in the program. He plays baseball and basketball, and also enjoys playing ‘Fortnite’, he also has aspirations to be a professional baseball player. Mylik is the recipient of the HoodRISE Academy 6th grade boys Most Improved Student Award.
     

  • Shamar McCollum:
    Shamar has displayed some very strong leadership attributes/characteristics/qualities since joining HoodRISE Academy. After being apart of HoodRISE for almost two years now, he does very well in taking the lead during collaborative projects; leading his group in the right direction and voicing his ideas/opinion. He is a very good communicator and definitely has the potential to be an effective leader amongst his peers. He plays basketball and also enjoys playing ‘Fortnite’, he also has aspirations to have a successful YouTube channel. Shamar is the recipient of the HoodRISE Academy 6th grade boys Leader on the RISE Award.

7th grade boys:

  • Joseph Rivera:
    From his sixth- to seventh-grade years, Joseph has shown major improvements in class participation and his grades. Before joining HoodRISE Academy he was failing some of his classes. After joining HoodRISE Academy, he has made the honor roll five marking periods consecutively. He also had some major behavioral issues when he first joined HoodRISE Academy, his behavior has improved immensely since then. He enjoys playing ‘PUBG’, his favorite NFL team is the Pittsburgh Steelers. Joseph is the recipient of the HoodRISE Academy 7th grade boys Turnaround Student of the Year Award.
     

  • Sheldon Ripply:
    Sheldon had some very intense anger issues before joining HoodRISE Academy, after joining there have been  major improvements made in his behavior. He has recently been able to find a way to deal with situations more calmly and without getting physical with others and/or raising his voice. He has also made great improvements in class participation, his grades, and has lowered the amount of suspension days. He plays basketball, football and wrestling. Sheldon is the recipient of the HoodRISE Academy 7th grade boys Leader on the RISE Award.
     

  • Eugene Sawyers:
    Eugene was very quiet when he first joined HoodRISE Academy in January, after he became more acquainted and comfortable with the other students and the HoodRISE Academy staff he didn’t hesitate to say demeaning things to others. Now you won’t hear him say anything demeaning to anyone in the program, in fact he has a lot of intelligent, respectful words to say. He has become more confident since joining HoodRISE Academy, he has proved that by the way he communicates and interacts with others in the program during collaborative projects and on all other occasions. He plays basketball and also enjoys playing ‘Fortnite’. Eugene is the recipient of the HoodRISE Academy 7th grade boys Most Improved Student Award.

8th grade boys:

  • Carlos Tirado:
    Carlos was getting suspended often and was hanging around the wrong crowd when he first joined HoodRISE Academy, he has since changed his behavior, who he was hanging out with, and hasn’t been suspended once during the 2017-2018 school year. His grades, attendance and class participation have improved immensely as well.  He was also quiet, but after he became more acquainted and comfortable with the HoodRISE Academy staff he has been talkative and has displayed very strong leadership attributes/characteristics/qualities. He does very well in taking the lead during collaborative projects; leading his group in the right direction, keeping his group focused and on task, and voicing his ideas/opinion. He is a very good communicator and definitely has the potential to be an effective leader among his peers. He plays basketball and football, and has aspirations to obtain a scholarship from a prestigious university that’s known for their academics and athletics. Carlos is the recipient of the HoodRISE Academy 8th grade boys Turnaround Student of the Year Award.
